Welling Court Mural Project

Welling Court Mural Project

The most treasured aspect of my time spent in São Paulo has been the relationships and lifestyle I have crafted within the artistic community. To spend everyday with talented and thoughtful individuals has been a blessing. In this time of transition back to New York City, my biggest concern has been losing this aspect of my life.

That concern was eased if not erased after my experience at the Welling Court Project in Astoria, Queens. Through an invitation by Graffiti Fine Art participant CERN Wonder, I took photos of this awesome event now in its second year. The day is highlighted by a block party put on by the local residents. The community is primarily Hispanic which meant boatloads of tacos and taquitos. Needless to say it was homemade and delicious.

As for the art, it was an interesting experience to work with artists that actually spoke English. I speak Portuguese but nothing compares to a conversation in your native language. Not to mention that these are New Yorkers like myself which added another layer of commonality. I could reference New York places, ideas or events and for me, something so simple like that was new and appreciated.

The photos show how talented they all are here. Some big names were involved such as Lady Pink and Cycle along with others, many of whom have been members in the game for years or are certainly on their ascendency.
